In many cultures the days just before the start of Lent meant a time for celebration and feasting and the PA Germans were no different. They often celebrated Fastnacht Day by using some of the indulgent ingredients in the kitchen, such as butter, sugar, eggs, and potatoes to produce yummy Fastnachts, or fried potato donuts. Visit to watch hearth cook Deborah Peterson make these and other pre-Lenten treats in the Summer Kitchen; we’ll even have some to share. But work on the farm never stops, so we’ll also have demonstrations of typical winter activities- preserving meat for long-term storage using the smokehouse, splitting wood for fires, and farm tours.
